Translating jobs: end-to-end process
This topic contains a detailed overview of the actions involved in producing a translation for an XTM Cloud project, using the XTM Connect – Trados Studio plugin in your copy of Trados Studio.
Translation workflow
A client's Project Manager uses XTM Cloud to create translation projects containing one source file, with a set source language and a single target language.
The Project Manager then assigns each translation project to you, the Linguist (translator). They are referred to as tasks.
In the XTM tasks screen, you see which tasks have been assigned to you. To access the XTM tasks screen, you must log in to XTM Cloud.
You can then translate a task in Trados Studio, in the normal way.
You return the task to XTM Cloud and then finish it, in Trados Studio.
All actions listed below are triggered by selecting an option in the Actions menu, in the XTM tasks screen. Actions 4-1a. and 4-1b. are a combination of two actions, performed in sequence (the second depends on the first). This means you can choose how you want to process projects and only perform the steps that suit you at a particular time.
Alternatively, we recommend that you use the equivalent single multi-action function, 4-2.
For more information about one of these actions, select the link to its topic in the table below:
Action | Actions menu option | See topic... |
---|---|---|
1. View assigned tasks | / | |
1a. If required, refresh or filter the XTM tasks list | / | |
2-1 Download the translation source file for a translation task from XTM Cloud (Each translation task only contains one source file. When you perform this action, the source file is automatically downloaded to the computer on which your copy of Trados Studio is installed. You cannot translate it until you have created a Trados Studio project that contains it. See next line.) NoteYou can choose to download a translation source file from XTM Cloud and then use the normal Trados Studio functionality to create a Trados Studio project containing the source file. There are two disadvantages to doing so:
For this reason, we recommend that you use the Actions menu Download source file and create Trados Studio project option (step 2.2) instead. | Download source file | |
OR (recommended) 2-2 Download the translation source file for a translation task from XTM Cloud and immediately create a Trados Studio translation project containing it (provided you select a source language). (If project creation fails, after multiple attempts, contact XTM Support. For details, see Contacting XTM Support if project creation fails.) | Download source file and create Trados Studio project | |
(3. Translate the source text in Trados Studio, in the normal way. You can do this offline if you require: you do not need to be connected to XTM Cloud, to translate a downloaded project.) | / | |
4-1a. Return a translated file to XTM Cloud without "finishing" it (To complete an uploaded translation task, you need to finish it. You can do so at the time you upload it, or later. See the actions in the next two lines. | Upload translation to XTM Cloud | 4-1a. Returning a translated file to XTM Cloud without "finishing" it. |
4-1b. Finish a task in XTM Cloud from Trados Studio (You only need to do this if you do not finish a translation task immediately (action 4-2 below). Ensure that you finish all uploaded translation tasks. Otherwise, they will not be complete.) | Finish task in XTM Cloud | |
OR (recommended) 4-2 Return a translated file to XTM Cloud and finish its task immediately (Do this if you do not want to upload a translation to XTM Cloud (action 4-1a.) and then finish the task it is in later (action 4-1b.). | Upload translation to XTM Cloud and finish task | OR 4-2 Returning a translated file to XTM Cloud and "finishing" the task. |
