Introduction
Purpose of this documentation
This documentation is about XTM Connect – Trados Studio, a plugin for Trados Studio (referred to below as "Trados Studio"). XTM Connect – Trados Studio integrates Trados Studio with XTM Cloud, a translation management system (TMS) in which translation jobs are added to translation projects. XTM Cloud is a product developed and sold by XTM International Ltd.
Translation workflow overview
Translation projects are created in XTM Cloud, on the basis of a predefined project template.
From XTM Cloud, these projects are sent to translators (referred to as "Linguists"), for translation in Trados Studio.
When Linguists return the texts they have translated to XTM Cloud, and any necessary revision or checking has been performed there, the translations are sent to the client (customer) that requested them. In addition, the translated content is added to the client's translation memory (TM) for reuse.
Note
For details of how to work with XTM Connect – Trados Studio, see Translating jobs: end-to-end process.
Who is this documentation for?
This documentation is intended for Linguists (translators) who use Trados Studio to produce translations and are going to work on translation projects created in XTM Cloud. When you are working in Trados Studio, the XTM Connect – Trados Studio plugin provides you with an interface to XTM Cloud.
Standard system terminology differences
The system terminology used in XTM Cloud is sometimes slightly different from Trados Studio. Refer to this table if you are unsure what a term in this documentation means:
XTM Cloud system term | Description |
---|---|
Finishing a task | In XTM Cloud, a task is not finished until you have actually translated and checked the source text, and returned it to XTM Cloud. |
Language mapping | Each main language has a language code, written in lower case. Example: French has the language code "fr". Variants of the French language have their own identifying code, written in upper case. Examples (selection): fr-FR (French, mainlaind France), fr-BE (Belgian French), fr-CA (Canadian French), fh-CH (Swiss French). In general, the language codes used in XTM Cloud are matched with (mapped to) the ones used in Trados Studio at program level. However, in the case of languages that have been newly added to Trados Studio or if there are any discrepancies in the existing language mapping, you can manage language code mapping manually when you configure your copy of XTM Connect – Trados Studio. You can: |
Linguist | In XTM Cloud, different user roles are defined. Each role has different rights which enable users to perform different tasks. In XTM Cloud, a Linguist is a translator, the person who actually translates texts into a specified target language. Also see Project Manager below. |
Project | See translation project below. |
Project Manager | In XTM Cloud, users with the Project Manager role primarily create translation projects and assign them to Linguists. |
Project template | In XTM Cloud, a project template contains standard settings (such as default customer, and default source and target language). These settings are applied to a new translation project (see below). |
Segment XLIFF state | In XTM Cloud, a segment's XLIFF state indicates whether any work has been done on that segment (its processing status), in XTM Cloud. It is the equivalent to the Trados Studio segment status. Examples: new, needs-translation, translated. See Mapping XTM Cloud segment statuses to Trados Studio segment statuses. XLIFF states are defined in the OASIS XLIFF Version 1.2 standard. |
Segment XLIFF state qualifier | In XTM Cloud, a segment's state qualifier indicates the segment's match type. In a translation file, segments are populated with the TM matches with the highest available state qualifier. If no match is found for a segment, the segment target is empty (and needs to be translated). Examples: exact-match, fuzzy-match, leveraged-tm. See Locking segments according to state qualifier. XLIFF state qualifiers are also defined (in a different section) in the OASIS XLIFF Version 1.2 standard. |
Segment status mapping | Process for specifying which segment status in XTM Cloud matches a particular segment status in Trados Studio. You only need to change the default settings if requested to do so. For details, see Mapping XTM Cloud segment statuses to Trados Studio segment statuses. |
Translation job | In XTM Cloud, a translation job contains one source file that is to be translated into one specific target language. Working in Trados Studio, you will be given the task of translating the file. Also see Translation project below. |
Translation project | XTM Cloud projects that are created for translation in Trados Studio can only have one source language. In XTM Cloud, like in Trados Studio, a translation project can contain source files that are to be translated into more than one target language. Each translation task that involves one specific target language is called a translation job. Translation projects are sometimes referred to simply as projects. |
Workflow | The process by which a file is fetched for translation in Trados Studio, from XTM Cloud, using XTM Connect – Trados Studio, returned to XTM Cloud and, if configured, reviewed and so on, before completion. |
Workflow step | An individual step, such as "Translate", "Review" or "Approve", in a workflow (see previous line). |
